About Dr Bruce Alexander

A research-informed clinician with decades of experience helping people change entrenched patterns

Dr Bruce Alexander combines scientific training, clinical hypnosis expertise, and over two decades of client work to help people address anxiety, habits, and behavioural challenges in a structured, practical way.

From medical research to clinical hypnotherapy

After completing a PhD in Medical Research at the University of Melbourne, Bruce worked as a research scientist investigating genetic factors involved in disease.

During his university years he personally experienced the benefits of hypnotherapy when it helped him overcome severe exam anxiety. That experience shaped his decision to shift from laboratory research to working directly with people.

In 1999 he completed formal training in clinical hypnosis and psychotherapy at the Australian Academy of Hypnotic Science and established Melbourne Clinical Hypnotherapy in Kew. Since then he has worked with thousands of clients across a wide range of behavioural and psychological issues.

Bruce has also tutored medical students at Monash University and lectured at the Australian Academy of Hypnotic Science, contributing to training the next generation of practitioners.

A structured, practical approach to change

Bruce’s work focuses on identifying the automatic patterns behind behaviour — the thoughts, emotional responses, and learned associations that keep problems repeating.

Sessions are tailored to each client and structured to produce measurable changes rather than vague insight alone. Hypnotherapy is used as a practical tool to help clients shift responses, strengthen control, and build more useful patterns.

This approach makes it particularly effective for issues involving anxiety, habits, compulsive behaviours, and stress-related responses.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all method, Bruce focuses on understanding how each client’s patterns developed and what will realistically help them change.
