Hypnotherapy – Medicine’s Dark Horse

Throughout the history of modern medicine, surgery and medication have held leading positions in the battle against disease. Usually these modalities come into play after the horse has bolted. The individual already has the disease or injury and medication and/or surgery are employed to rectify the problem. In more recent times government and medical authorities have begun to place more emphasis on preventative medicine. These ‘stop smoking’, ‘exercise more’, ‘drink less alcohol’, ‘drive safely’ media campaigns are an attempt to incite behavioural changes which, if established, are likely to improve health and extend life. Such campaigns are an important first step however they usually provide little, if any, follow up support. An increasing body of evidence is suggesting hypnotherapy may be an excellent technique for behavioural change. Once a desire to lose weight, stop smoking, reduce alcohol or exercise more has been initiated, hypnosis can be an efficient method by which these desires are manifested as realities.

Currently, medical research into the potential benefits of hypnotherapy is grossly underfunded. This is probably due to the fact there is far less potential for profit than, for example, pharmaceutical treatments. Nevertheless there are scientific studies which show positive results for hypnotherapy in the treatment of asthma, arthritis, bone fracture, cancer, depression, dermatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, warts, addictions, insomnia and migraine. Hypnosis has also been shown to be effective in pain management. A wide variety of stress, panic, anxiety disorders and phobias also respond well to hypnotherapy.

Television documentaries, demonstrating these results, are beginning to change public perception of hypnotherapy. Instead of hypnotists being view as charlatans and showmen they are increasingly be seen as credible medical and psychological therapists.

Perhaps we are at the forefront of a medical revolution. Many people are unhappy with pharmaceutical side effects and drug dependency. Hypnotherapy is drug free! Adverse side effects are extremely rare and the safety record of hypnotherapy is excellent.
